Dear Friends,

Best wishes to everyone across the world for a great teaching year in 2009!

My heartfelt condolences to the teachers and children affected by the catastrophic bush fires raging here in Australia. Last Saturday, February 7, was a very strange and dangerous day with temperatures of 47.9 degrees and high chaotic winds. Two hundred lives have been lost and huge fires are still burning across Victoria. The forecast next week is for another nasty spike in temperature and high winds.
I hope families will take the opportunity to leave early, as indeed I plan to do.

I have begun editing the material from my time in Fiji with Kathy Short and will send you an email as soon as the movies are ready. If you would like to receive an email alert, please sign up on the front page of the Inquiryschools website.

Warm regards,

Sherryl

Two New Movies

I have just uploaded two new movies to the Inquiryschools website under Movies 2008-2009.
The first looks at Year 6 students (10 - 11 years) as they explore personal inquiries within the unit 'What is History?'

The second movie is the first of a series which focus upon mathematics through the primary years.
This first movie follows Year 1 students (age 5-6) as they explores mathematical shapes.

Thanks to the students, teachers and school which made this sharing possible.

'Art in the Dark' movie

The movie 'Art in the Dark' featuring art work from Early Childhood students is now available for streaming and download.

The philosophy -

'I touch therefore I learn.

Understandings and discoveries come through children's fresh and uninhibited creativity.'

Thank you to the children who made this sharing possible.

Apologies for the long absence!

Dear Friends,

Apologies for the long absence! My dad became ill with pneumonia some months ago and I flew to New Zealand to be with him. He fought valiantly throughout but eventually lost the battle in October. He would have been proud to know that during October and my total absence from the site, Inquiryschools had 322,824 hits. It must be doing something right for teachers.

I have three projects which will be completed and uploaded before the end of the year. The first is a movie I made las… Continue

Jay McTighe

Jay McTighe of 'Understanding by Design' fame was recently in Melbourne and he talked to Inquiryschools about the three books in the UbD series and the concept of 'Backward Design'.
You can view a short excerpt of the conversation here, and the full version at www.inquiryschools.net.

Remembering Marie Clay

One year ago today on April 13, 2007, Marie Clay passed away in Auckland New Zealand. Somehow it feels right to choose this day for my first Blog of 2008, in memory and celebration of Marie’s legacy.

Last year, Graham McEwan, Chair of the Marie Clay Literacy Trust wrote;

‘Marie’s decision to focus on struggling learners and the resulting development of the Reading Recovery early intervention changed how the education community worldwide viewed these children’s chances of becoming literate....… Continue
