It's 2010 and I have been Missing in Action

Dear everyone,The recent scurrilous blogs have given me the push I needed!I HOPE I have now stopped anymore appearing. It is a fine balance between offering complete freedom to share while denying access to those who stoop at nothing to market their products.I know I have been 'Missing in Action' over the past year, despite being as passionate as ever about sharing good practice. I do apologize. I stepped back to get a family business going in order to earn some money. Those of you who have…See More

Global Connections with The Exhibition

Thumbnail
Has anyone linked up with another school during their Exhibition year and The Exhibition itself?  I am intrigued with the possibility of making global links and communicating with classes from other cultures, especially significantly different cultures.  The learning potential is huge for everyone involved. How did you link the inquiry topic?  Did you coordinate your topic or did you link on just a part of the inquiry topic.  There hasn't been much conversation on this topic, as far as I can…See More

A Year 7 Springboard Programme

Thumbnail
One of the negatives about the MYP in my experience is that it hasn't picked up from where the Exhibition finishes. In my previous school it was only in Year 9 where there was a significant project that students needed to engage with. I imagine this must be rather frustrating for students who have been required to work with significant independence, only to return to being at the bottom of the (new) school and being treated accordingly.I've just had a conversation with St Andrews School, in…See More

News

Dear everyone,

Sorry about the recent scurrilous blogs. I have now identified and removed those people from the network. It is a fine line between offering freedom to share while denying access to those who stoop at nothing to market their products.

I must also apologize for my silence over the past year, despite being as passionate as ever about sharing good practice. I stepped back to get a family farm going. If you have ever started a business from scratch, you will understand the time and commitment involved.

A big thank you to everyone who has shared and/or begun networking across schools. Fabulous!

Next month, I WILL complete the long overdue movies from Kathy Short. As soon as they are finished and have been approved by Kathy, I will upload the entire series to the inquiryschools site for you to stream and download.

Keep teaching well.

Two New Movies

I have just uploaded two new movies to the Inquiryschools website under Movies 2008-2009.

The first looks at Year 6 students (10 - 11 years) as they explore personal inquiries within the unit 'What is History?'

The second movie is the first of a series which focus upon mathematics through the primary years.

This first movie follows Year 1 students (age 5-6) as they explores mathematical shapes.

Thanks to the students, teachers and school… Continue

'Art in the Dark' movie

The movie 'Art in the Dark' featuring art work from Early Childhood students is now available for streaming and download.

The philosophy -

'I touch therefore I learn.

Understandings and discoveries come through children's fresh and uninhibited creativity.'

Thank you to the children who made this sharing possible.

Apologies for the long absence!

Dear Friends,

Apologies for the long absence! My dad became ill with pneumonia some months ago and I flew to New Zealand to be with him. He fought valiantly throughout but eventually lost the battle in October. He would have been proud to know that during October and my total absence from the site, Inquiryschools had 322,824 hits. It must be doing something right for teachers.

I have three projects which will be completed and uploaded before the end of the year. The first… Continue

Jay McTighe

Jay McTighe of 'Understanding by Design' fame was recently in Melbourne and he talked to Inquiryschools about the three books in the UbD series and the concept of 'Backward Design'.
You can view a short excerpt of the conversation here, and the full version at www.inquiryschools.net.

Remembering Marie Clay

One year ago today on April 13, 2007, Marie Clay passed away in Auckland New Zealand. Somehow it feels right to choose this day for my first Blog of 2008, in memory and celebration of Marie’s legacy.

Last year, Graham McEwan, Chair of the Marie Clay Literacy Trust wrote;

‘Marie’s decision to focus on struggling learners and the resulting development of the Reading Recovery early intervention changed how the education community worldwide viewed these children’s chances of… Continue
